DAVID RICE ATCHISON
U.S. PRESIDENT FOR A DAY - MARCH 4, 1849
INDIVIDUALLY NUMBERED, HAND CAST, & HAND PAINTED
This is a hand cast, hand painted figurine of David Rice Atchison, made to match the collectible Marx Toy Company President figures of the 1950s and 60s. It is 60mm tall (about 2 3/4 inches), weighs about an ounce, is cast from a resin plastic, and is painted with enamel paint. The front of the base says "ATCHISON" and the back says, "MARCH 4, 1849" in raised letters. Each figurine is individually and sequentially numbered.
Missouri Senator Atchison was the President pro tem of the Senate on March 4, 1849 when outgoing President James K. Polk's term ended. President-elect Zachary Taylor refused to take the Oath of Office on a Sunday and, as a result, constitutional scholars have argued the line of presidential succession led to Atchison for that day. Though his tombstone states this unique "achievement," Atchison himself claimed he spent most of his presidency asleep, recovering from inaugural weekend festivities. One of the photos shows the Atchison figurine between original Marx figurines of his "predecessor" (Polk) and "successor" (Taylor).
Elsewhere in this store, you will find other figurines in the Famous Americans series. In addition, there are other figurines of the U.S. presidents that Marx never made, every major party presidential nominee since 1944, every Chief Justice of the United States, and several current, recent, and historically significant U.S. Supreme Court justices.
